A couple of good free and paid software such as Nero, BurnAware and UltraISO are available to create bootable Windows CD/DVDs. Though creating a bootable flash drive and then installing Windows from USB is a better way, not every Windows user is comfortable with it.

If you are looking for a free tool to create and burn a bootable XP, Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8 bootable DVD, then RT Windows ISO Maker is the ideal software for the job. RT Windows ISO Maker is a free software from the makers of popular RT 7 Lite, a free software that lets you slipstream service packs, create unattended installation, include new themes, gadgets, wallpapers, logon screens into the setup ISO file.

RT Windows ISO Maker lets you create bootable Windows ISO from setup files and then lets you burn the image to create bootable DVD. This free tool also allows you burn Windows ISO files onto DVDs. The user interface of the software is very simple and with a few mouse clicks you will have a bootable DVD.

Key features:

# Create bootable XP, Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 ISOs

# Burn ISO files

# Burn normal files

# Verify CD/DVD

# Create non-bootable ISO images

It also lets you create non-bootable ISO images, if required. Overall, a handy tool for those users who would like to use a bootable DVD for Windows installation. RT Windows ISO Maker is a freeware and compatible with both x86 and x64 versions of Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 operating systems.

We suggest you use a USB flash drive to install Windows, as using a flash drive as installation media reduces the time required for the installation. You can follow our how to install Windows 8 from USB, create bootable USB, and free software to create bootable Windows 8 USB flash drive guides.

Microsoft was forced to pull the Windows RT 8.1 update late last week after users started complaining about their Surface RT tablets being bricked. Something in the update was rendering the Windows tablets unbootable, and Microsoft was left scratching its head and scrambling to fix the issue as quickly as possible.

The problem now seems to have been solved as Microsoft has released a Windows RT 8.1 recovery image. The problem is, as well as being a rather large 3.7GB download, the recovery process isn’t exactly simple.

Alongside the recovery image download there’s a 2-page 400k PDF with instructions on what you need to do to get your tablet working again. First up you need a USB drive with over 4GB of capacity and a PC running Windows 7 or later. You then have to format the USB drive with a FAT32 file system and then copy the recovery image you just downloaded to it.

With the recovery USB drive now created, you need to power down your Surface RT if it isn’t off already. Then:

Windows 8 Rt Iso
  • Insert the USB recovery drive into the USB port
  • Press and hold the volume-down (–) rocker
  • Press and release the power button
  • When the Surface logo appears, release the volume rocker

After that your tablet should load the recovery software from the USB drive. This is where the instructions Microsoft provides are essential. The recovery process involves typing in commands at the command prompt, restarting the tablet, and then typing in more commands at the command prompt while in administrator mode.

If you follow the instructions to the letter, by the end you should have a fully functioning Surface RT tablet again without any data lost, only now running Windows RT 8.1.

After reading through the PDF and the steps involved, I’d suggest anyone preparing to perform the recovery procedure go make themselves a very large coffee first.
