Windows Installer Not Correctly Installed

For me at least, this method cleared the problem I was having of not being able to check for Windows updates, and having it say: 'the Windows installer is not installed correctly'. The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.

Issue:

When you are trying to install and uninstall Autodesk products it fails with the error message 'The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed.
This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.' and you are forced to quit.

You may get this error when you try to install a program in Windows 7 or Windows Vista & this problem may occur if the Windows Installer files are damaged.

Causes:

This error could occur if the Windows Installer Service is disabled or if the Windows Installer Service is not registered properly.

Solution:

You can try the following solutions to resolve the issue:

To check if the Windows Installer Service is running:

  1. On Windows, click Start > Run.
  2. In Open, type services.msc and click OK.
  3. In the Services (Local) list, right-click Windows Installer and click Properties.
  4. Inspect the Start Up Type box. If it is set to Disable:
    1. From the Start Up Type drop-down list, select Manual.
    2. In the Service Status section, click Start.

To re-register the Windows Installer Service:

  1. On Windows, click Start > Run.
  2. In Open, type msiexec.exe /unreg and click OK.
  3. Click OK, if a confirmation message appears.
  4. On Windows, click Start > Run
  5. In Open, type msiexec.exe /regserver and click OK.
  6. Click OK, if a confirmation message appears.

If the problem persists, download the latest version of the Windows Installer from the Microsoft Support Site and install it on your computer.

To make windows installer to work under safe mode you need to create a registry entry for every type of safe mode you are login into:

Safe Mode

Type this in a command prompt and hit Enter:

Then start the Windows Installer service by typing net start msiserver

Safe Mode with Network

Type this in a command prompt and hit Enter:

Then start the Windows Installer service by typing net start msiserver.
